One of the biggest disappointments of our trip to Canada was the fact that Hummingbirds are a native species that we didn't get to see.
However, we do have a vaguely similar character in the UK. Not from among birds, mind you.
My mum spotted this one through the living room window helping itself to the nectar of our buddleia.

I very much enjoy how birdlike the profile of this little insect looks in the top pic, particularly compared to the closeup below.
